Essex

Essex is equally loved for its picturesque marshes, abundant forested areas, wetlands and open spaces, as it is for their seafood restaurants and antique stores that famously line its town center. The fried clam recipe was reportedly invented in Essex by Chubby Woodman early in the 20th century, and patrons line up for hours each summer outside Woodman’s to taste them still. Several films have been shot in Essex, including the Crucible with Daniel Day Lewis and Grown Ups starring Adam Sandler. Manchester and Essex share a perennially highly-ranked public school system.
